Smoke & draft assessment

Smoke entering living space or recurring draft problems call for assessment, not repeated test fires by the homeowner.

What the service should establish

A qualified professional may investigate the appliance, vent path, obstructions and interactions with house ventilation. Describe when the symptom occurs and whether fans, renovations or appliance changes preceded it, without assuming any one cause.

Where the scope stops

Stop using the affected appliance while seeking advice. For an active fire, a carbon-monoxide alarm or immediate danger, get outside and call 911. Do not treat an opened window or a chimney accessory as a confirmed repair.

What changes the work and the quote?

Describe the appliance, fuel, number of flues and last known service before requesting an estimate. Roof height, access restrictions, concealed areas and earlier alterations can affect what can be assessed or completed. Ask the contractor to distinguish a known requirement from an allowance that may change after examination.

Request the investigation or service fee separately from optional repairs. A revised scope should identify the newly documented condition, the proposed response and the change in price before additional work is authorized. Photographs are most useful when they identify the component and location, not just a close-up without context.

Keep a record that the next professional can use

Ask for the date, appliance identification, completed work, access limitations and outstanding recommendations. Keep product information and any written warranty with the report. A completed service invoice does not by itself establish that every part of the system was examined or that every concern was resolved.

Use your Chimney Passport to organize the handover and the Quote Comparison Lab to flag exclusions before choosing a company.

Background and safety references

For inspection and maintenance background, consult CSIA homeowner resources. Product-specific work follows the applicable manufacturer instructions and local requirements. Our official resources page separates government safety advice from industry education.

Take these questions to the call

Ask before approving work

  1. How will you distinguish obstruction from pressure or system issues?
  2. What conditions will be documented during assessment?
  3. What must be resolved before use resumes?

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for planning a safer, more comparable contractor search.

When should I ask about smoke & draft assessment?

Smoke entering living space or recurring draft problems call for assessment, not repeated test fires by the homeowner.

Is this included in a standard chimney sweep?

Do not assume so. Ask the company to name the specific service in its written proposal, identify the appliance and flue, and explain any separate specialist visit or charge.

Does a directory profile confirm this specialist service?

No. The company finder uses a broader recorded service category. Ask each company whether it handles this exact task and appliance, who will attend, and what qualifications and insurance apply.
